The Current State of the Solar Energy Industry

Solar energy was the first source of energy since the beginning of the world. Technologies and innovations have come but after all, we’re turning back to using solar energy. Solar energy is environment-friendly, it does no harm to our environment, other sources of energy like fossil fuels have caused numerous environmental complications. Companies are now switching from using fossil fuels to another source of energy that doesn’t contaminate the environment. 

Among all alternatives that are being adopted due to the environment-friendly nature, hydropower is leading followed by solar energy. People have also been noted to change from hydropower to solar energy because it is cheap and naturally occurring. Solar energy doesn’t require monthly subscriptions as in hydropower. Once you have installed the solar panels no one will be in control of your power.

Alistair Kay, the editor at Green Business Watch, is passionate about solar panels, but he knows that he has to work hard to make this passion felt in the wider population. “We know that what most people want to know about solar panels is how much money they will save as a result of having them fitted to their homes. They want hard data.”

To many people, solar energy is limited to the use of solar panels to collect energy to light our homes but that is not the case, there are integrated systems that use solar energy to do wonders. Solar energy as an industry is recording innovations on a weekly basis. Here is a list of some of the amazing solar energy systems that have been developed recently:

1. The Solar Powered Roads

The solar-powered road was first installed in Normandy, France. Solar panels were installed on the road collects solar energy which is used to light led bulbs in the road and also melting snow during the winter weathers. Route 66, America has also been installed with solar-powered roads.

2. Solar water purifiers

This is an amazing device that purifies water for drinking when it is exposed to the sun. This device does not necessarily need to be put in direct sunlight, it can draw energy from the visible sunlight.

3. Solar Thermal Fuels

This is a chemical that absorbs solar radiation and stores it for some days. The stored energy is then used as a source of heat to cook. The technology that is used in solar thermal fuel is the same with that of typical batteries. Solar thermal fuel technology is expected to replace the use of firewoods in cooking. By embracing this technology we will be saving our forests.

4. Wearable solar

We have heard about solar charging mobile phones and watches but the solar energy industry is advancing day by day, now small solar panels can be installed on fabrics and clothes. This technology is now used in home window curtains to collect energy which is later used to warm the house when temperatures are low. It has also led to heated car seats.

5. Solar Panel Tracking and Mounting Systems

This is an amazing technology that is meant to increase the efficiency of solar panels. The tracks installed in the panels are able to know the direction of sunlight, after knowing the direction the solar panel automatically rotates to face the sun directly. When sunlight hitting the solar panel directly from the sun there is an increased amount of radiation collected.

Solar energy is growing, creative ideas and innovations are implemented. These innovations are aiming to increase the efficiency of radiation collection in solar panels and storage in batteries. By 2050 solar energy is expected to be the largest source of energy for industries

  • South Korea’s largest power utility company has announced that it is pursuing a plan to develop a blockchain-based microgrid dubbed the ‘Future Micro Grid’. It will create an ‘open energy community’ that will bring together elements of existing microgrid technology with a blockchain implementation.
  • Nippon Yusen K.K., Japan’s largest shipping line by sales, is introducing its own digital currency for crew members. The shipper is developing its own digital cash, pegged to the U.S. dollar to avoid wild swings in value.

    The goal is to make it easier for seafaring workers to manage, send and convert money into their local currencies.

  • The Malaysian Ministry of Education is turning to blockchain technology to combat degree fraud in order to maintain the integrity and reputation of universities in the Southeast Asian country. This has seen the ministry unveil an issuance and verification system for university degrees based on the NEM blockchain. Malaysia’s Ministry of Education said:

    Realizing the need to safeguard the reputation and integrity of Malaysian universities, the Ministry of Education has taken a decisive action to prevent such degree fraud which also cheats and unfairly disadvantages genuine students.

  • IBM and Columbia University announced the introduction of two new blockchain startup accelerators as critical components of their center for research, education, and innovation in blockchain technology and data transparency. The joint venture will provide 20 entrepreneurs and blockchain network founders worldwide with access to the assets, knowledge, and support they need to build sustainable blockchain businesses and enterprise-grade blockchain networks.
  • French Prudential Supervision and Resolution Authority (ACPR) has granted permission for tobacco shops in the country to sell bitcoin from January 1, 2019. Commenting on the choice of tobacco shops as a vehicle for selling bitcoin, Adil Zakhar, one to tobacco shops director for strategy and development, said:

    Tobacco shop owners are the best channel as they are trusted by customers and they are used to sell vouchers such as credit for mobile phones.

  • The University of Tokyo opens up a blockchain course called “Blockсhain Innovation Donation Course” at its graduate engineering school, thanks to an $800,000 donation from a consortium that includes the Ethereum Foundation and Japanese banking juggernaut Sumitomo Mitsui.

    Test Energy consumption per capita. Country Ranking

    From 2000 to 2013, global energy investments have increased by 100%. It’s not just about popularizing renewable energy since the lion’s share of electricity needed of the population is generated as earlier — from fossil energy sources. Besides the rapid growth of global energy consumption, mankind has to face the increase of harmful emissions and environmental worsening.

    To visually show the responsibility’s share of each person and to note which countries should try to reduce electricity consumption or accelerate the green energy transition, let’s look at the World Bank’s report on the energy consumption per capita in different countries:

    For the sake of clear result, consumption is calculated in fuel equivalent — the amount of oil needed to provide a certain level of energy.

    Necessary to know

    To really understand how important it is to care for the environment, we want to show how “expensive” electricity is.

    Take for example an ordinary home light bulb with a power of 100 watts. Let’s leave the lights on throug the whole year (sure, you will need to replace the bulb several times, you know :)).

    Let’s make a simple calculation:

    • 24 hours a day = 8760 hours per year.
    • 0.1 kW multiply by 8760 = 876 kW/hour.

    In order to ensure the operation of one bulb during the year, we need to:

    • Burn 320 kg of coal (1 ton of coal approximately gives 2500 kW/hour)
    • Spend 2 hours for a wind turbine with a capacity of 1.5 MW, 25% of efficiency.
    • Take 35 minutes for a solar power plant with a capacity of 1.5 MW (an area of about 3 hectares, imagine!).
    • Decay 16 grams of Uranium.
    • Spend 2.5 hours of a hydro-electric turbine operation, with a capacity of 339 kW.

    We wanted to show clearly that any extra consumption of electricity is detrimental to ourselves. Please, love renewable energy and save resources.

    • Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp, known as SpaceX, is looking to line up a US$750m leveraged loan, sources said. Bank of America Merrill Lynch is leading the transaction. A lenders presentation will be held by the SpaceX management team on November 7.
      Tesla rival Nikola Motor unveils hydrogen-powered truck for Europe. U.S. electric truck maker Nikola Motor unveiled the third version of its hydrogen-powered electric semitrailer truck on Tuesday, which it says will be aimed at European customers. Trevor Milton, the firm’s founder and chief executive, said:

    "The Nikola Tre — tre meaning "three" in Norwegian — will be the "first European zero-emission commercial truck.""

    • Scientists reveal strange molecule that can store sun’s energy for 18 Years. A Swedish research team believes it found the breakthrough renewables was looking for, a solar thermal fuel that can store the sun’s energy for up to 18 years.

    • The gas engine still has a long life to live, Aston Martin CEO says. The British manufacturer of sports cars has made concessions to the trend towards all-electric vehicles with its RapidE, due for sale in 2019. The firm’s ultra-luxury brand, Lagonda, will also have an electric drive train and is due in 2021.

    • Hyundai, Kia team up to invest $250 million in ride-hailing firm Grab. The partnership will see Grab, Hyundai and Kia bring stakeholders from the EV sector together to work on improving the adoption of EVs in the region. A number of projects will be launched, beginning with one in Singapore next year. That pilot will look to use electric vehicles to "maximize cost efficiencies for Grab’s driver-partners."

    Solar DAO 2.0: New DAO, Eco-Crowdfunding, New Tokens, ​and Social Responsibility

    Solar DAO Blockchain project to release free tokens and build a “green-kickstarter” Ecotopia.


    Solar DAO upgrades “closed fund” to an opened Marketplace Community. They are building a legal peer-to-peer environment for funding/backing projects from it in a variety of ways. Marketplace members will get a bunch of opportunities, for example, to choose sustainable projects to invest or to offer their own project or initiative and get funding through Solar DAO.

    For Ecotopia to perform as real decentralized and autonomic system on smart contracts, Solar DAO is going to distribute free SD2 tokens, based on ERC721 standard which will be the mechanism of participants’ cooperation. The initial SDAO tokenholders become VIP-users and moderators of Ecotopia. They will also get other bonuses, which will be known later from the Solar DAO team.


    There is no need for trust between its members in Solar DAO decentralized society based on smart-contracts. Trust is the basis of the foundation and, by the way, original Blockchain goal. The team will fulfill this by using the DAICO model to eliminate the trust issue between the nodes offering initiatives and the nodes supporting and financing these initiatives.

    Transformed Solar DAO will become an instrument for eco-crowdfunding, enabling implementation of environmental programs, creation of renewable energy generation capacities and other green projects. The Solar DAO Community will unite conscious and progressive people who are ready to make breakthrough steps forward sustainable future.


    Ecotopia platform members may have different roles. A person who wants to propose a project must make a special contribution to the project with SDAO tokens, and complete an extended verification. After a registration and detailed description of the project, first, Solar DAO team of international PV experts will evaluate it, then the project will be submitted for the consideration to Community (on this stage SDAO tokenholers will vote for its construction).

    Till the end of 2018 the team is going to work hard on R&D and detailed functional description. And plans to distribute tokens (out of charge and in free access) in two stages in 2019.

    The Solar DAO origin was built in 2012, while the founders have been already working in solar industry since 1991. The geography of implemented projects is wide: Spain, Russia, South Africa, to name a few.

    Solar DAO реформирует «закрытый фонд» в открытый маркетплейс. Они создают юридическую среду с равноправным взаимодействием участников для финансирования / поддержки проектов различными способами. Участники рынка получат множество возможностей, например, выбор устойчивых проектов для инвестирования или предоставления собственного проекта/инициативы и получения финансирования с помощью Solar DAO.

    Ecotopia выступает как реальная децентрализованная и автономная система на смарт контрактах, поэтому Solar DAO собирается распространять бесплатные токены SD2 на основе стандарта ERC721, который станет основой механизма взаимодействия участников. Первоначальные владельцы токенов SDAO становятся VIP-пользователями и модераторами Ecotopia. Они также получат другие бонусы, о которых команда Solar DAO расскажет чуть позже.


    Нет необходимости в доверии между членами децентрализованного общества Solar DAO, основанном на смарт контрактах.
